5th Litvak days to kick off in London
The 5th Litvak days kick off in London on 1 December. The annual event is dedicated to the history and culture of the Lithuanian Jewry. This year it is co-organised by the Embassy of Lithuania in the UK and University College London (UCL) in cooperation with YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
The programme of the 5th Litvak days dedicated to the 90th anniversary of YIVO include a two day conference at UCL (December 1) and the Wiener Library (December 2), a recital of music by Leopold Godowsky, and an exhibition "YIVO: Yiddish Academy in Vilna 1925-2015". (Full Programme can be downloaded here).
“The rich and diverse Litvak heritage is an integral part of Lithuanian culture. I am delighted that the annual Litvak days in London is becoming somewhat of a bridge that links the UK’s Lithuanian, Jewish and British communities”, the Lithuanian Ambassador Asta Skaisgiryte said.
The 5th Litvak days will be attended by Mantvydas Bekešius, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Jonathan Brent, YIVO Executive Director, Jonathan Arkush, President of Board of Deputies of British Jews, Faina Kukliansky, President of the Lithuanian Jewish Community.
The recital on December 1 will be performed by London based Lithuanian pianist Gabija Butkute.
